Everton have had a poor start to their Premier League campaign, winning two, drawing one, and losing three. The last of their three losses came this weekend when they lost to Sheffield United at Goodison Park.
The Toffees face off against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium on Tuesday night in the third round of the League Cup. Marco Silva’s men won their previous round 4-2, defeating Lincoln City. The manager is expected to field a strong lineup even though his side will face Manchester City in the weekend.
PREDICTED EVERTON LINEUP vs SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY (4-2-3-1)
Goalkeeper
Summer signing Jonas Lossl is yet to make his debut for the Toffees, and we aren’t sure if he will against Sheffield Wednesday as he hasn’t been in the Everton squad for weeks due to an injury. Jordan Pickford could continue in goal as Maarten Stekelenburg hasn’t made an appearance since last season’s League Cup.
Defence
The centre-back pairing of Yerry Mina and Michael Keane have played in the Premier League, but we could see a change at the back in the Everton lineup, with Mason Holgate replacing Mina for the game against Wednesday. Holgate started the last League Cup game as well.
Djibril Sidibé will most likely start at right-back, replacing Seamus Coleman in the Everton lineup. Experienced left-back Leighton Baines hasn’t played a game this season and it seems that he may not play against Wednesday as well, after being left out of the squad for the Sheffield United game. Lucas Digne will, in that case, continue at left-back for the Toffees.
Midfield
Summer signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin is certain to miss the game, while we aren’t quite sure if Andre Gomes is fit enough to return. If Gomes is not fit, we could see Fabian Delph play alongside Tom Davies in the centre of the park. Gylfi Sigurdsson could play in the attacking midfield role for the Toffees, as he did in the previous round.
Attack
Dominic Calvert-Lewin could return to the Everton lineup for Wednesday’s game and play as the lone striker. Theo Walcott, who came on in the loss to Sheffield United, could start for Everton on the right, while former Arsenal player Alex Iwobi could start on the left, having also come off the bench against Sheffield United.
