Manchester United’s strategy in the transfer market seems to be quite weird, as the club has failed to notch up signings after an initial phase where they completed quick business. Since signing up Lee Grant, whose first-team action will be extremely limited, United haven’t made any notable movement in the market.
At a time when Liverpool have made quality additions to their squad, and even Manchester City, as well as Chelsea, have lured quality players in Riyad Mahrez and Jorginho respectively, United’s inactivity is worrisome to the manager. Here, I opine three players who the club should consider to bolster their roster.
Harry Maguire:
Leicester City’s prized asset, Harry Maguire has been subject to speculation regarding his future. The 25-year-old was stellar during the World Cup with England. However, to be honest, Maguire has been quite consistent and has improved massively over the past couple of years. His aerial strength is unmatched of sorts, as Maguire can be dominant in both the boxes during set pieces.
Maguire’s composure in the ball is commendable too, and so is his nifty footwork as he can carry the ball ahead and break the opposition’s midfield lines with well-timed passes. Moreover, his strong physique enables him to win the ball back by crunch tackles and crucial interceptions due to his game-awareness.
United could do with a lot more assurance at the back, and hence Maguire’s arrival could add much-needed steel to the backline. However, the Foxes would be keen to keep hold of their player after having signed him just a year ago.
Christian Pulisic:
United’s frontline is lopsided currently, as the trio of Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford prefers playing from the left wing. This leaves the manager with lack of qualitative options to play on the right wing, as the likes of Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are players who like to play through the centre.
Christian Pulisic would be an excellent addition to the squad, as the lad is someone who could regularly play from the right side of the attacking three with regularity. He possesses amazing footwork, quick feet and a knack of delivering sumptuous balls into the box by threading passes through the slightest of gaps.
Pulisic’s arrival would bring some balance to the offensive moves, as most of United’s attacks are initiated through the central areas and the left flank. His dribbling would add flair and creativity, as well as an aura of unpredictability in the attacking moves, thereby allowing the team more options to find the back of the net.
Toby Alderweireld:
Signing a left back and a right-winger seems unlikely right now, and United have probably made strengthening the core of the defence a major priority. Toby Alderwerield is someone who can instantly improve the backline and would add immense experience to bring much more stability to central defence too.
Alderweireld is a good passer of the ball, and he can initiate attacks with some patient build-up play from the back. He is a composed presence at the back of the field and possesses prior Premier League experience. Alderweireld has great defensive attributes too, as he wins the ball back without lunging rashly, and intercepts the ball quickly accurately.
He always looks for forward passes and has arguably been the best defender in the Premier League over the past few years. His addition should be considered as the topmost requirement right now.
