Wolverhampton Wanderers are firm favourites to clinch the Championship silverware, which would also grant them an automatic promotion to the Premier League. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side has collected 68 points from 30 league outings and have a lead of 11 points over 2nd placed Derby County.
As an uplift is appearing to be a likely outcome for them, here are three players they should target in the summer to beef up their arsenal and set up a competitive team on their potential return to the top flight.
Nicolai Jorgensen
Although Espirito Santo has preferred to use Leo Bonatini as his main striker in the Championship, it would be wise to introduce some new faces to elevate the level of competition if they get promoted. Feyenoord poacher, Nicolai Jorgensen would be a dazzling signing for them and Wolves have been linked with the Denmark international in the recent past.
In 38 games last season, Jorgensen scored 23 goals and he has carried his form into this season as well, as the 27-year-old has notched up 7 goals and 3 assists in 16 Eredivisie appearances. He is a clinical striker who is blessed with the ability of holding the ball well, creates chances for his teammates and interestingly, he is keen to ply his trade in the Premier League.
Joao Carvalho
Wolves have injected a lot of top quality Portuguese players in their ranks and in the summer, Joao Carvalho should be roped in to follow the trend. The 20-year-old Benfica central midfielder is immensely talented and will only get better in the coming seasons by accumulating more time on the pitch.
Carvalho’s vision and passing accuracy is quite commendable considering his age. He has represented various youth sides of Portugal and is arguably one of the highly rated emerging talents in the game. His pace, energy and resilience in the middle should be a welcome addition to the ranks of the Wolves.
Jose Fonte
Former Southampton defender, Jose Fonte, was understood to be on the radar of Espirito Santo last month. However, his move to the Molineux Stadium failed to materialise. Fonte has been battling for a place in the backline of the Hammers owing to the availability of Angelo Ogbonna, Winston Reid and James Collins.
Wolves might be inclined to sign players who are well accustomed to the Premier League and Fonte certainly fits the bill. Not only is he a player of fine pedigree but also a solid defender who can be a genuine leader at the back and can help Wolves in climbing up the ladder if they get promoted.
