Newcastle United will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Wednesday night when they host league leaders Liverpool at St James’ Park.
The Magpies are coming into this game off the back of a 1-1 away draw with Crystal Palace. A point on their travels was at least a better result from last week’s humbling 2-0 home loss to West Ham United, but the Toon Army’s perennial inconsistency is once again harming their European aspirations as they languish in 11th place.
Eddie Howe’s team simply have to be at their sublime best to beat Liverpool, who are flying high and head to Tyneside after beating champions Manchester City 2-0.
Newcastle United Team News
Alexander Isak suffered a hip injury against Crystal Palace and was forced off the pitch at the weekend, but Eddie Howe calmed down fears by suggesting it was just a contact injury rather than a muscle strain or tear. Thus, the hope is the Swede will make a speedy recovery.
Meanwhile, Sven Botman (knee), Jamaal Lascelles (knee) and Emil Krafth (shoulder) are all long-term absentees and will not play again before the New Year.
Predicted Newcastle United lineup vs Liverpool (4-3-3)
Goalkeeper
Nick Pope is a certain starter for Howe’s side. The lanky Englishman needs to bring in his A-game to keep a highly motivated Liverpool side at bay.
Defence
Newcastle’s options in defence have been severely depleted due to injuries, so changes are unlikely to take place.
Dan Burn will continue to partner Fabian Schar in central defence, and the duo have to be on their toes throughout the game to keep the Liverpool striker quiet. The experienced Lloyd Kelly may get the nod over Lewis Hall at left-back to contain the in-form Mohamed Salah, but there’s every chance of Tino Livramento retaining his spot at right-back.
Midfield
Howe could ring changes in midfield following a quick turnaround between games. Joelinton, who started on the left wing at Palace, could drop into a deeper role and partner Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff in the hosts’ engine room. The possible trio have to bring a lot of energy, bite and tenacity to disrupt the Reds’ passing rhythm and control.
Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock are likely to drop to the bench.
Attack
Harvey Barnes may be handed a start in the Newcastle attack. Operating from the left flank, he could use his direct running, pace and movement to cause issues for the Liverpool backline.
Anthony Gordon will try to be a nuisance for the visiting defenders from the opposite flank. Should Isak is deemed not fully fit to start, Callum Wilson could make his first Premier League start of the season having come off the bench in Newcastle’s last two matches after recovering from a back injury.
