3 Clubs Who Should Make A Move For Promising Chelsea Centre-Back| Opinion

Chelsea are reportedly willing to listen to offers for defender Trevoh Chalobah this summer amidst interest from several clubs.

New Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino is understood to only want four central defenders going into the start of the 2023/24 season. The Pensioners currently have Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah in their books, although Colwill is expected to get first-team opportunities this season after a breakout campaign on loan with Brighton.

According to The Evening Standard, Chelsea have made the decision to sanction the sale of Trevoh Chalobah if the price is right. Serie A side Inter Milan are interested in signing the defender and value him at around £25million, while there is also interest from other clubs.

Chalobah, 24, who signed a new six-year deal with the Pensioners back in November, is looking to play regularly next season that can warrant him being in contention to get selected for Gareth Southgate’s England team for the upcoming 2024 European Championships, the report adds.

On that note, here are three clubs that should make a move for Trevoh Chalobah this summer.

#Everton

After an incredibly disappointing 2022/23 campaign in which Everton conceded 57 goals, Sean Dyche is certain to prioritise addressing his squad’s defensive problems. The likes of James Tarkowski, Ben Godfrey and Michael Keane were all subpar throughout the past season, while Yerry Mina and Conor Coady have left the club.

Thus, Sean Dyche knows there is a need to inject fresh blood into the Everton backline to avoid something similar to the last season. The Toffees need to have a stable and reliable defence to stay far away from the relegation zone next term, and someone like Trevoh Chalobah would fit the bill perfectly.

Able to operate at centre-back and right-back, Chalobah would add a lot of value to Everton’s defence. He will also not cost a fortune, and the Blues theoretically should understand the importance of acquiring the services of a player of his quality, versatility and homegrown status.

#West Ham United

West Ham have been armed with a whopping £105 million following the sale of former captain Declan Rice to Arsenal.

It is massively vital that West Ham not only pick the perfect replacement for Rice but also spend the money wisely to address other problematic areas. One of those areas is the defence, with none of Kurt Zouma, Thilo Kehrer or Nayef Aguerd delivering consistent performances from the heart of the Hammers’ backline. Plus, Angelo Ogbonna is well past his prime and needs replacing sooner rather than later.

West Ham desperately need defensive reinforcements after a poor 2022/23 Premier League campaign and a player like Trevoh Chalobah could turn out to be a smart signing. Chalobah is a talented defender who will add much-needed solidity and pace to West Ham’s defence, whilst improving their overall squad depth.

If the 24-year-old wants to keep developing and harbours hopes of representing England, a move to Moyes’ West Ham could be ideal.

#Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is attracting interest from many top Premier League clubs this summer, including Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Guehi, 23, enjoyed a solid season at Selhurst Park, his second since joining from boyhood club Chelsea. He missed just one of Crystal Palace’s Premier League fixtures last term and even captained the side on various occasions, so losing him this summer would be a big blow for Roy Hodgson and his team.

Keeping that in mind, Palace could line up Trevoh Chalobah as a potential replacement for Guehi. Chalobah has got a decent taste of Premier League football, and if he were to stay at Chelsea, he would no doubt play some part in their season. But at this stage of his career, the 24-year-old needs to be playing week in, week out, and that could happen at Palace under the tutelage of Roy Hodgson.

As Chelsea are open to selling him this summer, Chalobah can move to Palace and virtually start his career from afresh—as Guehi did by leaving the west London club in 2021.
