Newcastle Planning January Swoop For Versatile Chelsea Winger: Right Option For Howe?

Newcastle United are reportedly planning a January swoop for Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic.

The 24-year-old winger put in some impressive performances for the United States during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring a goal and assisting two more. After playing a key role in the US side that reached the knockout stages of the showpiece event, there is plenty of interest in the player from Premier League clubs.

According to The Daily Mirror, Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested in signing Christian Pulisic, with manager Eddie Howe ready to move on players in order to make room for his arrival. Manchester United and Arsenal are also keeping tabs on the situation but would prefer to bring in the Chelsea outcast on loan.

Pulisic’s game time at Chelsea has been limited under new boss Graham Potter. Prior to the World Cup, the USA international had only started three of the Blues’ 14 Premier League games in the 2022-23 campaign.

While Man United and Arsenal want him on loan, Newcastle seeking a permanent move for Christian Pulisic should tempt Chelsea into selling him in January. The report adds that the Pensioners’ asking price would probably start in the region of £40million, with Eddie Howe’s club prepared to bid for the 24-year-old.

Christian Pulisic to Newcastle United—The right choice?

Christian Pulisic has struggled for regular opportunities at Stamford Bridge ever since making the move from Borussia Dortmund back in 2019. A combination of injuries and inconsistency has not allowed the American to live up to the lofty expectations at Chelsea. After three years it looks like his time in west London could be coming to an end.

Newcastle United are among Pulisic’s potential suitors, with Eddie Howe keen to add to his squad after a bright start to the 2022/23 Premier League season. The Magpies are third in the table and fighting for the top four—which should see the board back Howe in the upcoming January transfer window.

Howe wants to reinforce his attacking department at St. James’ Park as he seeks to add more goals to his squad in the gruelling second half of the campaign. And the Newcastle boss has identified Pulisic as one of his major targets, especially after watching him flourish at the World Cup.

When fully fit, focused and in rhythm, Christian Pulisic showed in Qatar that he can be a major attacking force which could hugely benefit Newcastle if they manage to secure his signature. The USA international can play anywhere across the front line, or in the hole behind the striker, and his potential acquisition would see him improve the depth of the Newcastle squad.

With just 18 months left on his contract, Chelsea are considering the possibility of cashing in on Pulisic. The American star needs a new environment to kickstart his stuttering club career, and a move to Newcastle could do him a world of good.
