Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a January swoop for Borussia Monchengladbach star Marcus Thuram.
The Toon Army have enjoyed an excellent campaign and went into the World Cup hiatus third on the table, ahead of the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. Eddie Howe is building a strong side and will be eyeing reinforcements in the winter window to continue their push for Champions League qualification.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are ready to fork out £10million to sign Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach. There are clubs across Europe interested in the Gladbach forward, including Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, and thus, the Magpies want to agree on a deal in principle next month.
Thuram, 25, has been in scintillating form this season, bagging 13 goals for the Bundesliga club from just 17 matches. His impressive performances have seen him being called up to the French squad for the ongoing World Cup.
The Frenchman’s contract at Borussia-Park ends at the end of the season, meaning he would be eligible to open pre-contract talks with foreign clubs in January; however, the report adds that Gladbach would rather sell Thuram for £10m in the winter window than lose him for nothing in the summer.

Newcastle United are keen to bolster their squad when the transfer window reopens. Eddie Howe’s have performed incredibly well so far in the 2022/23 campaign, losing just one out of their 14 games.
Now that the Magpies are genuinely in the mix to finish in the top four, the club’s Saudi owners are willing to back Eddie Howe in the mid-season trading period to give his team the best chance to bring Champions League football to St. James’ Park next year. And Howe seemingly wants to sign a forward, with Marcus Thuram the latest name to be linked with Newcastle.
Thuram has been enjoying one of the most productive campaigns of his career with Gladbach, scoring 13 goals and assisting a further four times in 17 appearances across all competitions. Standing at 6ft 4ins tall, the France international has pace, physicality and power in abundance, and those mixed with his technical skills on the ball make him a real handful to deal with for the opposition.
He is strong as an Ox and can bully defenders in the air, whilst possessing the game intelligence and creative brain to set up his teammates in attacking areas of the pitch. The Italy-born striker is at the peak of his powers and could make an instant impact at St. James’ Park. He would be an upgrade on Chris Wood, who has failed to impress at the club since arriving from Burnley in January.
Furthermore, Thuram can play anywhere across the front three, and Howe’s Newcastle will benefit from his versatility. With Gladbach reportedly looking at around £10million to sell Thuram in the January window, Newcastle United must do everything possible to beat other clubs for the striker’s signature.
