Newcastle United will travel to Molineux to face Wolves on Sunday hoping to continue their impressive start to the new Premier League season.
The Geordies were excellent at St James’ Park last weekend as they held Manchester City to a thrilling 3-3 draw. While a point against Pep Guardiola’s Man City is always brilliant, it could have been so much better had Eddie Howe’s side held on to their 3-1 lead.
Nonetheless, Eddie Howe and Newcastle United, who edged out Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Cup in midweek, would be in a buoyant mood ahead of their trip to Wolves, who will look to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham.
Newcastle United Team News
Newcastle United have been dealt with a big blow as Callum Wilson has been ruled out for several weeks with a hamstring problem. Emil Krafth is facing a spell on the sidelines after being stretchered off in the EFL Cup win over Tranmere Rovers.
But manager Eddie Howe says he hopes club-record signing Alexander Isak will be available to face Wolves after joining from Real Sociedad on Friday. Dan Burn is back in contention after missing the Tranmere Rovers game because of the concussion protocol.
Predicted Newcastle United lineup vs Wolves (4-3-3)
Goalkeeper
Nick Pope has quickly become Newcastle United’s first-choice goalkeeper after moving from Burnley in the summer. He was excellent against Man City and will be aiming to keep up his good form between the sticks on Sunday.
Defence
Dan Burn being available for selection is a big boost for the Magpies, and the lanky defender will walk straight into the starting XI. He will slot in as left-back, with Kieran Trippier operating from the other side of the back four.
Fabian Schar will partner Sven Botman at the heart of the Newcastle backline, as they hope to stop the Wolves forwards from penetrating and keep a clean sheet at Molineux.
Midfield
Bruno Guimaraes is the anchor for the Magpies. Sitting at the base of midfield, the Brazilian breaks the opposition attacks and controls the tempo of the game. His presence will allow the likes of Joelinton and Joe Willock to make late runs in the box and attack crosses from wide areas.
Howe will hope the trio of Bruno, Joelinton and Willock manages to boss the midfield against Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho on Sunday.
Attack
Allan Saint-Maximin is the X-factor player for Newcastle, and he will look to cause endless problems to the Wolves backline with his directness, dribbling and burst of acceleration. He will line up on the left flank, with Miguel Almiron providing energy and width from the other side.
With Callum Wilson injured, Chris Wood becomes the natural choice to lead the Newcastle attack against Wolves. Howe is unlikely to throw Alexander Isak in at the deep end, meaning the new signing will start on the bench.
