Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba will reportedly leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The France international’s current contract expires in just three months, but despite his time slowly coming to an end at Old Trafford, he is still considering all the options available to him before deciding his next destination. The central midfielder could sign a contract extension at Man United once it becomes clear who the next manager will be, while clubs like Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are among some clubs vying for his signature.
According to Sky Sports, Paul Pogba could make a shock switch to a Premier League rival with two unnamed top-flight clubs in contact with his representatives. In fact, talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy has claimed that he won’t be surprised to see Tottenham boss Antonio Conte plot an ambitious summer swoop for the Manchester United star.
Cundy told talkSPORT: “There’s a couple of Premier League clubs that we believe are interested and it wouldn’t surprise me if [Antonio] Conte’s looking at that situation.
He added: “Where’s he going to go that’s really going to elevate his career? He’s a free transfer.”
Paul Pogba to Tottenham—Good move for all the parties involved?
Currently on international duty with France, Paul Pogba gave the clearest indication that he is unhappy at Manchester United and would seek pastures new this summer, citing the season as “dead” after the Red Devils’ elimination from the Champions League leaving them with another trophyless campaign.
It doesn’t look like the 2018 French World Cup winner will extend his stay at Man United, which opens the door for several other top clubs to convince him to join them on a free transfer, but could Tottenham be a right fit for the midfielder?
A move to Tottenham does seem odd initially but Paul Pogba has worked with Antonio Conte before at Juventus. It was under Conte, the France international played some of the best football of his career and established himself as one of Europe’s top midfielders then. The Italian tactician managed to get the best out of the 29-year-old by playing him on the left of a midfield three at Juventus, giving him the license to push forward and do the damage in the final third,
A free role largely benefited Pogba as he racked up 12 goals and 16 assists in 78 games under Conte, whilst winning two Serie A titles. This prompted Manchester United to re-sign the midfielder for a mammoth £93 million in August 2016. However, his second spell overall with the Mancunian giants has been a hit and miss, with Pogba set to go five full seasons without winning a trophy in May.
Coming back to Spurs, Conte could definitely make use of his good relationship with Pogba and persuade him to join. A lot could hinge on Tottenham’s Champions League qualification, though, which should give top clubs like Real Madrid, Juventus and PSG a lot more authority when it comes to negotiating with the player.
Nonetheless, if Conte and Spurs can still convince Pogba without Champions League football, it will represent a good move for everyone involved.
