Inter Milan midfield ace Marcelo Brozovic is reportedly on the radar of Liverpool ahead of the winter transfer window.
The Croatian international, 28, joined Inter Milan from Dinamo Zagreb in 2015 and has developed into one of Serie A’s best midfielders in recent years. However, he is out of contract at the end of the season and talks over fresher terms have slowed down since they commenced a few months ago. Due to his contract with Inter expiring in the summer, the midfielder is eligible to begin negotiating a pre-contract agreement with non-Italian clubs from January 1 onwards.
According to a report from the Daily Star, Liverpool are interested in signing Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic in January and are ready to hand him a £120,000-a-week contract to fend off interest from the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester United, PSG and Real Madrid.
Brozovic has been a key cog in new manager Simone Inzaghi’s midfield this season, helping Inter Milan rise to third in the Serie A table. He has once again impressed with his tenacious displays in Italy, featuring 12 times in the league to date.
Marcelo Brozovic to Inter Milan—The right midfield option for Jurgen Klopp?
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp lost a vital player this summer in Georginio Wijnaldum, who ran down his contract and left Anfield on a free transfer to join Paris Saint-Germain. The Reds chose to not replace Wijnaldum, and with James Milner and Naby Keita sustaining injuries of late, Klopp has been left short in midfield.
Thiago Alcantara is yet to prove himself at Liverpool since arriving from Bayern Munich amidst a lot of fanfare last summer, while Jordan Henderson has entered his 30s. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cannot be relied upon due to his past injury record, Harvey Elliot remains sidelined for the foreseeable future with a fractured foot and Fabinho is getting injured way too often in the last 12-15 months.
Not to forget, with Keita set to take part in AFCON at the turn of the year, Klopp’s priority heading into the winter transfer window has to be bolstering his midfield unit. That makes Inter’s Marcelo Brozovic a top potential addition for Liverpool.
Brozovic, who has been functioning as a deep-lying playmaker in recent years at Inter, can provide impetus, energy and combativeness to the Reds’ midfield. A superb passer of the ball, the Croat can dictate the tempo of the game with short and long passing whilst possessing the vision to spot a pass in the final third of the pitch.
A tenacious ball-winner and a tough tackler, the ex-Dinamo Zagreb man is a workhorse in the middle of the park, which makes a perfect fit in Klopp’s system at Anfield. Moreover, at 28, he can go on to contribute to the Merseysiders at a high intensity for several more years, whilst being a plausible replacement for the ageing Henderson.
Due to his contract expiring at the end of the season, if Brozovic can be signed on a financially sensible fee in the upcoming window it would be a coup of sorts for Liverpool.
