Newcastle United are one of the four clubs linked with a move for out of favour Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling.
The Magpies are raring to flex their financial muscle in the upcoming transfer window after the North East English club’s £305 million takeover by a Saudi-led consortium this month. The Tyneside-based outfit are now the wealthiest club in the world and have a massive financial advantage over everyone else in England.
According to The Express, cash-rich Newcastle United could look at snaring Raheem Sterling away after he recently admitted to the possibility of leaving Manchester City for regular game time.
Raheem Sterling, 26, has found himself on the periphery at Manchester City this season, starting only three out of nine Premier League games following Jack Grealish’s big-money move from Aston Villa.
The England international has fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola and with less than 18 months remaining on his current contract, he is stalling over extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium amid growing frustrations at a lack of regular game time.
Raheem Sterling to Newcastle United—A fantastic addition to the Magpies squad?
Managerless Newcastle United are lying in the relegation zone having failed to win a single game this season, losing five out of the nine games.
With Steve Bruce parting ways with the club, the Magpies need a new manager and further reinforcements to avoid the drop. With just eleven goals scored in nine games, it is easy to understand the area Newcastle must invest heavily during the January transfer window.
The likes of Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron need more quality players in and around them to consistently deliver the goods in front of goal. To that end, Raheem Sterling certainly fits the bill at St James’ Park as a proven source of goals and assists in the Premier League.
Predominantly a left-winger, Raheem Sterling possesses the versatility to play off the right and through the middle as a false 9 when required. He has plundered a massive 115 goals and 88 assists in 304 appearances for Manchester City alone in all competitions so far, which is certainly an incredible record for someone who is not an out-and-out centre-forward.
The English winger has tremendous technical skills and smart movement and can beat defenders with his explosive pace and guile on his day. The 26-year-old has the vision and ability to pick out passes and create chances for his teammates in the final third, whilst developing into a composed finisher in 1v1 situations in past seasons under Guardiola.
Sterling will add the much-needed flair and dynamism to a blunt Newcastle attack that is goal-shy and failing to create chances consistently. Also, his experience and winning culture at Manchester City could go a long way towards transforming the Magpies’ mentality in the Premier League.
Under new owners, Newcastle are embarking on a new journey and signing a player of Sterling’s stature in January would immediately represent a massive statement of intent.
