Manchester United could make a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka ahead of the 2021-22 season. The German international has been at the club since 2018, having moved from Schalke.
As per Sport Bild, the Red Devils have contacted Goretzka’s representatives about a potential move to the Premier League.
The midfielder is being seen as a replacement for Paul Pogba, who could leave the club this summer. Like Pogba, Goretzka is also entering the final year of his contract at his club.
Another report has stated that a few other English clubs are also interested in signing Goretzka, as are Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The midfielder has made 112 appearances for his club, scoring 25 goals and assisting 27 times. He has also been in good form for his country, scoring 14 times in 35 appearances for Germany.
Leon Goretzka to Manchester United – A good choice by the club?
Manchester United have to make a big decision on the future of Paul Pogba before the start of the 2021-22 season. The French midfielder showcased what he is capable of when on form at Euro 2020. But, with just one year remaining on his current deal at the Red Devils, the English club could sell the Frenchman and recoup some of the investment they made to sign him in 2016.
Manchester United have shown they mean business by signing Sancho. Wonder if that will change some agents’ strategy to use the club to speed up their players’ contract negotiations.
Goretzka and Varane would of course be great signings. How realistic are they though?— Jan Aage Fjortoft 🏳️🌈 🇳🇴 (@JanAageFjortoft) July 1, 2021
If Manchester United sell Pogba, they will have to go into the transfer market to sign an able replacement as they do not have good options in midfield. A player like Leon Goretzka would fit perfectly in United’s set-up and would also suit the English game.
The German is a strong and powerful midfielder who is aggressive with and without the ball. Goretzka has an eye for goal from midfield, while he is also a combative player who makes strong tackles and interceptions. He could be used as a link player between midfield and attack thanks to his strong passing and movement with the ball.
Goretzka is also good in the air, thanks to his 6’2″ frame. The German is just 26 years of age and has his peak years ahead of him. He could be a better choice than Fred in the Manchester United midfield as he would add strength, power and aggression from the middle of the park. He has solid experience of playing in Europe and excelling, as well as international tournaments with Germany.
The former Schalke man is an all-round midfielder who would fit well in the Premier League and could be a top player for the Red Devils if they decide to sign him.
