Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero if the Argentine decides to stay in England. City had announced earlier this week that the 32-year-old forward is going to leave the club in the summer when his contract expires.
Daily Mail are reporting that Aguero is keen on staying in England and Chelsea are in the lead to sign him. The likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with potential moves for the City legend.
Sergio Aguero has racked up over 250 goals for Manchester City since signing for them in 2011 and has helped the club to four Premier League titles.
Potential game changer for Chelsea or an avoidable move?
Sergio Aguero will have a host of clubs to choose from when he leaves Manchester City at the end of the season. He’s been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, with many experts eager to see a club level partnership with his friend and compatriot Lionel Messi.
Chelsea’s interest in Aguero is a surprising one, considering the number of attacking options that they have in their ranks. Tammy Abraham impressed in former manager Frank Lampard’s first season in charge of the club and is seen as a bright prospect. Chelsea also have veteran striker Olivier Giroud in their ranks, but the Frenchman’s Chelsea contract expires at the end of the season. Tuchel has also experimented with Kai Havertz in a false number 9 role and the German hasn’t looked out of place at all.
But the player that would be impacted hard by the signing of Aguero is Timo Werner. The German, who moved to the English side last summer for £47.5 million, has failed to live up to expectations. If the Blues decide to bring in Aguero, Werner’s chances at the club may be hit severely, despite the team management trying hard to conjure formations to include him in the lineup after a horrendous start as the lone striker.
That would be a big mistake by Chelsea and a decision that could only help them in the short-term. Aguero will be 33 by the time he joins Chelsea and may have just a year at a top level like the Premier League. Werner has had a difficult first season, but his performances with RB Leipzig showed that he is a player that can score bucketloads of goals when on song.
Aguero’s persistent injury issues is another reason why the Blues should not chase the Argentinian. He will be a big name signing and but will potentially be more of a glamour transfer and a way for Chelsea to replicate what City did with the Frank Lampard signing.
Chelsea should, instead, ideally focus on getting Timo Werner back to his best and form a team around him.
