Barcelona are reportedly keen on signing veteran Argentine forward Sergio Aguero. Aguero has been a part of Manchester City since 2011 and has won an unprecedented four Premier League titles with the club.
According to Tycsports, Barca are keen on bringing Aguero, who has a strong friendship with Lionel Messi. New Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s potential move for the City marksman could also be influenced by the possibility that Messi might be convinced to sign an extension if the deal materialises. Both Messi and Aguero’s contract with their respective clubs expires at the end of this season.
The 32-year-old Aguero has had a difficult 2020-21 campaign, with injuries and Covid ravaging his season where he has managed just 14 appearances in all competitions.
Sergio Aguero: A good option for the club?
It seems that Manchester City may not offer Sergio Aguero a new contract and he will be allowed to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season. The Argentine has been one of the most important players for City over the last decade, scoring over 250 goals for the club and in the process, becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Aguero scored 23 goals in all competitions last season but has only got on the scoresheet thrice this season. The Argentinian’s powers have waned considerably, with injuries playing a massive part, especially over the last couple of years.
The 32-year-old could be a decent signing for Barcelona and could be a like for like replacement for Luis Suarez, who left the club last year. Barcelona have struggled for goals from the centre-forward position this season and will need to sign a top-class striker next season to compete for the league and Champions League once again.
The signing of Aguero will only be a stop-gap solution for cash strapped Barcelona, though, as the Argentinian is set to turn 33 later this year and may have 1-2 years to contribute at the top level. His signing would also make sense if it results in Lionel Messi – who is a close compatriot of Aguero – staying at the club for yet another season.
But it is widely understood that the deal could be a compulsion due to an acute shortage of funds at the Camp Nou, which is stopping the club from moving for younger players like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
Aguero would be a far better option, though, than Martin Braithwaite or even Antoine Griezmann in the centre-forward role.
