If reports are to be believed, Manchester United are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante in the current transfer window. The French midfielder moved to Stamford Bridge in 2016 after helping Leicester City win the Premier League title.
According to Mirror Football, Manchester United have enquired about the availability of Kante. The report states that the London club are willing to let N’Golo Kante leave if the right offer comes in. Manchester United have reportedly contacted the player’s representatives, but a deal can reportedly only go ahead if the Frenchman is willing to reduce his £300,000-a-week wages that he earns at Chelsea.
Kante, who has made over 170 appearances for Chelsea, has three years remaining on his current deal at the club.
N’Golo Kante: Wise Of Ole To Go After Him?
N’Golo Kante is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders of his generation, winning back-to-back Premier League titles with Leicester City and Chelsea. The 29-year-old also played an important role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph in Russia.
Kante has won the FA Cup and Europa League, apart from the Premier League with Chelsea, and is seen as an important player for the Blues. But, with Chelsea spending huge money in the current transfer window, they might have to let go of a few players to balance the books.
The Frenchman could be a fantastic signing for most sides in the Premier League, including Manchester United. Kante is a player with fantastic positioning sense, great work-rate, and has the ability to tackle and intercept balls in the middle of the park. These are some qualities that the Red Devils currently miss in midfield. Another former Chelsea player, Nemanja Matic, offers a good shield in front of the backline but is not as robust and quick in the middle of the park, lacking the much-needed dynamism.
With Manchester United struggling to grasp control in the midfield battle with most Premier League teams, a world-class midfielder like Kante could make them stronger and more compact defensively. It could also finally allow Paul Pogba to wield his optimum attacking prowess, which he has not been able to showcase at Manchester United, despite a number of tweaks by the team management since his arrival.
But despite the reports surfacing on the backdrop of a couple of insipid United displays, it looks unlikely that Frank Lampard would be ready to let go of such an important player at this stage of transition the club is going through. The Blues have invested heavily in attack and at the back but their defensive midfield options are sparse in comparison. Given that they are yet to settle down and show any rhythm all over the pitch, it will be a huge surprise if they let go of a dynamic and relentless operator like N’Golo Kante in this transfer window.
