Leeds United have been linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Rafinha Alcantara, as per reports.
The 27-year old’s contract with Barcelona expires in July 2021, but it is unlikely he will get an extension or feature under new manager Ronald Koeman.
Leeds United still need some depth and quality in their squad to ensure they give themselves the best chance of survival next season, and are interested in Rafinha.
As per Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona will only see Rafinha for a fee of €16 million, and Leeds are trying to bring the asking price down.
Rafinha to Leeds United – A smashing move by Bielsa?
Predominantly an attacking midfielder, Rafinha found it hard to make the Barcelona playing XI on a consistent basis, and had to move out on loan to muster regular playing time.
His performances for Celta Vigo last season were impressive, and he played a key role as they just about stayed in the top flight.
Having made it through the Barcelona academy, Rafinha has impeccable technique and the skills that will make the fans stand up and take notice.
The 27-year old’s dribbling ability will come in handy for Bielsa’s side, especially during the transitions. Last season, he managed 2.1 dribbles per game in the league, and was the most creative player in the team as well.
Bielsa’s side play fluent football that is easy on the eye, and Rafinha would fit in instantly as his passing is solid, and he can hold on to the ball in tight areas. He averaged 44.1 passes per game for Celta last season, and was dispossessed just 1.7 times a game. (Stats via Whoscored)
Pablo Hernandez has been an incredible performed for Leeds, and has so often been the creative outlet with his ability to find his teammates and link up with the attackers. He will be expected to play a key role next season, but at 35, he isn’t getting any younger.
There are a lot of games to be played next season, and in a shorter overall time span because of the delayed start, so Leeds will need all the depth and quality they can get their hands on.
Rafinha can offer them just that, and perhaps be the long-term successor to Hernandez, who has been a fantastic servant of the club.
