Tottenham Hotspur offered the chance to sign Watford star: Should they make a move?

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Watford captain Troy Deeney following the Hornets’ relegation to the Championship.

The north London outfit has held talks with Watford over an initial loan deal for Deeney, as per Daily Mail.

The forward confessed he may have played his last game for the Hornets in an of the heart interview following their relegation on the final day of the 2019-20 Premier League season.

Since Troy Parrott has joined Milwall on loan, Spurs want to provide cover for Harry Kane upfront. And Watford are ready to offload the striker as he is one of the top wage earners currently at the club.

Troy Deeney to Tottenham Hotspur – Why they should make a move

It would by no means be an alluring transfer, but Deeney’s playing style and aggression could potentially do a job for Spurs.

Deeney has evolved into a proficient Premier League footballer, he has managed to chisel the abilities that helped him climb from the bottom of English football to the top flight with Watford.

His strength, physicality and ability to hold the ball upfront would benefit Spurs, who had relied far too much on Kane in recent years. Deeney has played in each of English football’s top four divisions, starting in League Two with Walsall.

The club’s Player of the Year in his final season at the Bescot Stadium, Deeney’s 14 goals in 2009/10 earned him a move to Watford in the Championship. He was also instrumental leading up to the Hornets’ promotion to the Premier League in the 2015-16 campaign by scoring an impressive 64 Championship Goals.

Although he’s approaching the fag end of his professional career, Deeney is a proven goal-scorer in the Premier League, and managed to score 10 goals last season in a struggling Watford side.

Mourinho knows how to get the best out of physical strikers, and Deeney falls into that group. Deeney won more aerial duels per game (7.3) than any other player in the Premier League last season, and he could be a good plan B for the Portuguese manager next season against certain teams.

Moreover, this deal won’t cost much money to Spurs and simultaneously would provide a good alternative option in the upcoming season.

Deeney has a magnificent all-round game, similar to Kane, and can provide offensive versatility in the final third of the game and would be a perfect back-up, in what could be a gruelling season for Spurs considering their Europa League commitments.
