Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been linked with a move for Atalanta wing-back Timothy Castagne.
The Belgian has been with the Italian club since 2017, having moved from Genk, and has been a dependable figure for the Italians over the last three seasons.
As per Daily Mail, the 24-year-old is open to a move to Tottenham, even though he supported Arsenal as a boy.
The north London side want to capitalise on the fact that Castagne’s contract with Atalanta expires next season, and the Italian club would not want him to leave on a free transfer.
But, Spurs will have to face competition with the likes of Roma, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli, who are all interested in signing him as well (h/t Transfermarketweb).
Tottenham Hotspur should move in to sign Timothy Castagne
Timothy Castagne is a dependable wing-back, capable of playing on either wing. Castagne predominantly plays on the right side, and has also on occasions played as a right-sided midfielder for Atalanta.
The Belgian is a lanky defender, standing at 6’1″, who likes to move forward at every opportunity and put in teasing crosses into the box.
Castagne is a hard-working player, who always puts in a shift, moving from defence to attack and vice versa. He is decent in the air, can track back to retrieve possession by reading the game.
While he does not have blistering pace, he makes up for it with good positioning sense. Tottenham need a back-up right-back to give competition to Serge Aurier, who is Mourinho’s only natural right-back option in his squad.
Castagne could fill in for Aurier when he injured or when Mourinho wants to rotate the squad – which he will have to do a lot of next season because of Europa League commitments.
Aurier’s consistency has been an issue, as the full-back gets into some good positions but flatters to deceive with his crossing. Castagne, with his ambidextrous ability, would be a better option against teams who play deep, considering he is a better passer of the ball than Aurier, and can find his teammates in the box.
He is a dependable, and hard-working wing-back – qualities that Mourinho wants in his players, so Castagne would be a good fit.
