Manchester United linked with a transfer for versatile attacker: Right move by the club?

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move to sign Bournemouth attacker David Brooks.

Brooks played just a handful of games in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign, and could not help his side remain in the top-flight.

As per Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have turned their attention towards Brooks after dropping their interest in Juventus winger Douglas Costa.

The report further says that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been interested in Brooks for over a year, but the Red Devils hesitated at the £50 million price tag slapped on the Welsh attacker.

Brooks has been with Bournemouth since 2018, having joined the club from Sheffield United for a fee of £11.5 million. His current deal with the Cherries expires in 2022.

David Brooks to Manchester United – Right move by the club?

It is pretty clear that Manchester United are big fans of Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, and the Red Devils have been in discussions with the German club for quite a while.

With the signing still hanging in the balance, Manchester United need to look at other alternatives as they can’t just remain passing in the transfer window, with pre-season set to start soon.

David Brooks is a left-footed winger and attacking midfielder, who likes to cut into central areas, using his good pace and dribbling to trouble the opposition. He is also a clever passer of the ball, threading balls into the feet of attackers in the final third.

The 23-year-old’s smart passing makes him a good candidate for the No. 10 role as he is not just a speed merchant who uses his pace to dribble past opponents. Manchester United’s interest in him is not a surprise as he is a player with huge potential.

Brooks has already played 12 times for the Wales national team, despite playing just 84 times in senior club football.

While Brooks is talented, there are a few issues with this deal. His recent injury will be a worry, although he did return to the Bournemouth team following the resumption of football in June.

The Bournemouth attacker is nowhere as good as Sancho, so he is not an alternative to Sancho. He could be a good squad signing, to give Solskjaer more options, especially if the likes of Lingard, Mata, and Pereira leave the club.

Brooks could be a good squad player, but not one who can be a key first-team player for Manchester United next season.
