Manchester United are reportedly set to back out of a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho. The young Englishman has been at the top of Manchester United’s wishlist this summer, following the former Manchester City player’s fantastic season with the German giants.
As per Express, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is ready to withdraw from negotiations as the transfer fee set by Sancho’s representatives is far too high for them. Sancho’s contract with the club was extended earlier in the month, with his current deal set to expire in 2023.
Jadon Sancho had a fantastic 2019-20 season for Dortmund, scoring 20 times and assisting a further 20 times in 44 games in all competitions. The 20-year-old attacker has become a regular for the England national team set-up as well.
Abandoning Jadon Sancho Chase: Will it be the right decision?
It seems that Manchester United are yet again bungling in the transfer market. The Red Devils have been chasing Jadon Sancho for the last few months, but unlike rivals like Manchester City and Chelsea, who completed deals even before the season ended, United are still trying to negotiate a transfer fee. United made the same mistake last summer when they withdrew from negotiations to sign Bruno Fernandes, only to return for him in January.
The Premier League side are desperately in need of additions in the attack, and a player like Jadon Sancho could take them closer to the top two in the league. Sancho has turned into a world-class player who can tear defences on his day, and is also supremely consistent. He fits the mould of the kind of player that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants in his squad, and is also one that would get fans off their seats at Old Trafford.
Jadon Sancho is also very young – only 20 years of age, and he is an investment that could help United reap rewards for years to come. The Red Devils have always signed young British talent even if it meant paying massive fees, and they should do so again with the Sancho signing. He is not just a player for the present but for the future too, who could form a great partnership with the likes of Marcus Rashford for the next decade or so.
There aren’t too many better players in his position that are available for Manchester United to sign this summer, which is why withdrawing from a deal to sign Sancho does not make sense. With the likes of Chelsea spending massively to get back among the title hopefuls, United cannot afford to be left behind at this crucial juncture, especially having struggled for prominence in the upper echelons of the Premier League table since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
