Chelsea Might Have Found A Cheaper Chilwell Alternative: A Good Option For Lampard?

Chelsea are set to rival Everton for Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilon in the transfer window, as per reports.

Frank Lampard is still in search of a new left-back, with neither Marcos Alonso nor Emerson Palmieri managing to make the left-back position their own last season.

Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell is another player Chelsea are after, but the Foxes’ high asking price for the England international might make Chelsea look elsewhere.

As per Sky Sports, Chelsea could better Everton’s bid of £18million for Reguilon, as an alternative to Chilwell.

Reguilon impressed on loan with Sevilla this season and even voted as the best in that position in La Liga last season.

Sergio Reguilon – A good option for Chelsea?

The Spaniard is a natural left-back and has been impressive in his loan spell with Sevilla so far. In 34 games for Sevilla in all competitions, he has racked up 2 goals and 4 assists and has all the attributes of a modern-day left-back.

Although he has shone for Sevilla this season, the likes of Ferland Mendy, Marcelo and the returning Achraf Hakimi are all great options at left-back for Los Blancos next season, so Reguilon might have to move elsewhere for regular football.

Reguilon, like Chilwell, is just 23 and is already performing in a top league; clear evidence that he would be able to transfer his form over to the Premier League.

The 23-year old has a proactive style of defending, preferring to win the ball high up the pitch rather than being left in 1v1 situations against the opposition winger.

His impressive attacking contribution combined with his tenacious style out of possession makes him an ideal left-back choice for any club that implements a high-pressing, possession-based brand of football.

Furthermore, his pace makes him well-suited to cover the space left behind during transitions, making him a useful asset to have even when his side are under the threat of being counter-attacked.

Sevilla is also keen on securing Reguilon on loan for another season but could face an impossible task with reported interest from the Premier League clubs.

If it comes to a choice between joining Chelsea or Everton, the 23-year-old could be tempted to join Lampard’s side knowing well he will get Champions League football and that the left-back position is there to be taken.

Reguilon is yet to his prime years as a footballer, and can turn into a long-term buy, for a much cheaper price. A definite no-brainer for Chelsea.
