Chelsea Eye A Transfer For Versatile Juventus Star: The Depth They Sorely Need?

Premier League side Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Juventus attacker Federico Bernardeschi.

The former Fiorentina player, who moved to Juventus in 2017, is reportedly a player that the Italian side are willing to let go this summer.

Calciomercato have reported that the winger, who was signed for £36 million in 2017, has attracted interest from Chelsea as well as Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

Although he was a key player under previous manager Maurizio Sarri, Juventus are willing to let him go as they want to give Andrea Pirlo the funds to stamp his authority on the squad.

Chelsea have already signed attacking reinforcements in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, while they are also interested in signing Kai Havertz (h/t Metro). Bernardeschi’s current deal with Juventus expires in two seasons.

Federico Bernardeschi to Chelsea – The depth they need for next season?

The left-footed Bernardeschi has played several roles at Juventus. Primarily a right-sided winger, the Italian likes to cut in and take on defences, like most inverted wingers. The 26-year-old has also operated as a central attacking midfielder for the Italians.

Bernardeschi has also played as a central midfielder as well as a left-sided winger. But, he thrives in the right-wing role. The Italian international cleverly uses his pace and dribbling to move to dangerous positions, threading ambitious passes to the strikers.

The Italian, though, is not prolific, either with goals or assists. This will be a worry for Chelsea, who will want him to play a key role if he is added to the team.

The Blues lost two experienced right-sided wingers in Willian and Pedro, both leaving after their contracts expired. The west London side have signed Ziyech, who will be the first-choice right-sided midfielder. The likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic can also play on the right.

Chelsea, it seems, have decent options in the wide areas, but with the number of games that the Blues will play next season – especially with a tightly-packed calendar – they will need at least two players in each position. This is where Bernardeschi will fit in if he is signed by Chelsea.

He will be an option off the bench, and play second fiddle to Ziyech. His Champions League experience could be vital for the Blues, and if they can bring him in for a bargain, this could be a good deal for them.
