Manchester United Keeping Tabs On Italian Ace: The Right Player For The Club?

Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Napoli’s young goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Meret, who is an Italian international, has been with the club since 2018, having joined them from Udinese.

The Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly sent scouts to watch Meret a few times, and he is said to be an option for the club if either one of David de Gea or Dean Henderson leaves the club, as per Daily Star.

Meret joined Napoli two years ago for a whopping €35 million, and is a highly regarded young custodian in Europe. The 23-year-old still has three years remaining on his current contract at Napoli.

The right decision by Manchester United to target Alex Meret?

David de Gea has had a difficult 18 months at Manchester United, where he has made numerous mistakes and his dip in form has surprised many.

The 29-year-old Spanish international has been at the club since 2011, and has developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

The Spaniard was awarded a bumper deal by the club in 2019, which made him one of the highest-paid goalkeepers in the world. His deal at Old Trafford will expire only in 2023.

Alex Meret, on the other hand, is a promising young keeper, who has tremendous reflexes, is good in one-on-one situations, and has shown a maturity that belies his age. The 6’3″ is deceptively agile for someone so tall, while also showing great composure in the penalty area. The Italian is on the path to become a top goalkeeper in Europe.

Although he is a phenomenal talent, Meret may not be a good fit at Manchester United. He isn’t very good with his feet and doesn’t have the ability to build from the back like a lot of modern ‘keepers. Solskjaer has shown that he wants to build from the back, and Meret not having this key quality may go against him.

If Manchester United do find a buyer for de Gea – which will be a tough task considering his astronomical wages – they should perhaps give Dean Henderson a chance, before deciding to dip their toes into the transfer market.

Henderson has been in great form for Sheffield United, and has shown that he is capable of playing at a top level in the Premier League.

There is also the problem of Meret settling into the Premier League’s more physical aspect, which has caught out other talented keepers, like Chelsea’s Kepa. The Red Devils should give Henderson a chance if de Gea eventually leaves the club.
