Wolves asked to pay £23m for defensive rock: Why they should break the bank for him

Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani reportedly is a target for Premier League side Wolves.

The Italian defender has found playing time hard to come by at Juve, as he is featured in just seven games in all competitions so far this season.

According to Tuttosport (via Daily Mail), Wolves have already made a bid of £18 million to sign the 25-year-old, but Juventus want £23 million.

Arsenal are also reportedly interested in signing the centre-back. Rugani is also looking to make the switch to the Premier League, so that helps Wolves’ cause.

The former Empoli man signed a new deal with the club last season, and his contract expires only in 2024. Rugani has played 94 games for the club in all competitions, scoring seven goals in the process

Daniele Rugani – Should Wolves go all in for him?

Wolves have had yet another strong season, and are currently in the running to finish in the top six, following their seventh-place finish last season. The club are currently sixth in the Premier League, with several teams competing for the final Europa League spot.

Nuno Espirito Santo has a strong squad, but if they are to go one step higher and compete for the Champions League spots, they will need to invest significantly to strengthen and deepen their squad.

Their success has been down to their work-rate, counter-attacking ability, and the strong backline. The three-man defence has worked well, led by captain Conor Coady.

But, the addition of a player of Daniele Rugani’s quality will strengthen the defence further. Rugani is a towering figure, standing at 6’3″, and uses his height to his advantage, as he is very strong in the air.

The Italian is a strong passer of the ball as well, averaging 51.5 passes per game in the 2018-19 Serie A season. The right-footed centre-back is calm distributor of the ball from the back, and would add more technical quality to the defence.

He anticipates attacks well and nips them in the bud with his intelligence. Rugani would be a very good signing for Wolves, and could become an integral part of the Wolves defence next season, forming a good partnership with Coady at the back.

Rugani’s passing and composure would add another dimension to the Wolves side next season if they sign him.
