After tracking PSG’s Thomas Meunier for several months, Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined the race to sign the versatile full-back.
According to Express, Tottenham are in talks to sign the Belgian international on a free transfer after his contract runs out in July.
Due to the financial stress in recent times, Tottenham have very little to spend this summer, and Jose Mourinho will be looking at free agents or swap deals to add more quality and depth to the squad.
It is being reported that the Portuguese gaffer has already made the first move by speaking to the Meunier, who is represented by super-agent Pini Zahavi, in order to convince him to switch to Spurs.
Thomas Meunier – A solid option for Tottenham?
Though Meunier would be a free agent this summer, the Belgian could be the ideal man to put an end to Tottenham’s right-back woes, which have seen them suffer a number of occasions this season.
Serge Aurier is the best option Mourinho has in that position, but he has not been consistent enough in attack, and has often been a liability at the back.
Meunier. for free, would be one hell of a signing for any side at the moment, but Spurs will have to move quickly as Liverpool and Manchester United also interested in the Belgian.
The full-back is assured with his passing (pass accuracy of 85.3%), and can provide good service for the attackers from the right flank, having managed 1.2 key passes a game in Ligue 1. He is a tough defender, very strong in the air, and is strong at holding on to the ball.
The most important thing about Meunier is that the player is at the peak of his career and has the much-needed experience under his belt to help turn things around in north London. Meunier, along with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen — if he signs an extension — could form an organised defence powered by experience just as their Portuguese boss likes.
Considering the current situation at Spurs, and the need for Mourinho to stamp his authority on the squad, Spurs should do everything they can to convince Meunier to sign with them.
