Fernandes Impresses, Martial Disappoints: Manchester United Player Ratings vs Tottenham

In their first Premier League game after the restart, Manchester United secured a 1-1 draw against Tottenham in north London on Friday.

The Red Devils were pegged back in the first half after a venomous strike by Steven Bergwijn, which was too powerful for David de Gea to stop.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side dominated possession as Spurs sat deep and tried to play on the counter, and finally got the reward for their persistence via the penalty spot. Bruno Fernandes dispatched the penalty after Paul Pogba was brought down by Eric Dier in the box.

There were some positives for Manchester United from the game, but Solskjaer and co. will be disappointed at not taking all three points.

Let’s take a look at the Manchester United player ratings from the game against Spurs:

Manchester United player ratings vs Tottenham

David de Gea (5)

Was partly at fault for the goal which he could have done better with as it came straight at him. Redeemed himself with a one-handed save in the first half. His place will be under threat next season if he continues to put in such performances.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (6)

Looked solid as ever in defence, but continues to lack the edge going forward. Had opportunities to put in first-time crosses into the box, but was blocked time and again.

Victor Lindelof (6)

Kept Harry Kane quiet for most of the night and had a decent game. Was substituted with what looked like an injury.

Harry Maguire (6)

Allowed Bergwijn to run past him with ease to score Spurs’ opening goal. Wasn’t troubled otherwise as he won numerous aerial duels and tried to build attacks from the back with his passing.

Luke Shaw (6)

Was out of position at times, but recovered well to make interceptions and tackles. Bombed forward at every opportunity and looked a threat on the left side.

Scott McTominay (7)

Covered a lot of ground and looked lively, putting in a few important tackles in midfield. Provided a good shield for the United defence after the introduction of Paul Pogba.

Fred (6)

Wasn’t at his best in the game but did not make any errors. He was replaced by Pogba in the game.

Bruno Fernandes (8)

Looked lively and full of energy even before scoring the penalty. Some deft touches and flicks, and played key passes to the forwards.

Marcus Rashford (5)

He looked out of pace and did not have a big impact on the game from the left flank. Didn’t have space to run in behind the Spurs defence.

Daniel James (4)

Like Rashford, James did not have any space to operate in a congested midfield. Spurs left-back Ben Davies had the better of his Welsh counterpart.

Anthony Martial (6)

Was absent in the entire first half. Should have scored from the penalty box on two occasions.

Substitutes

Paul Pogba (7)

Won United the all-important penalty and linked up well with Fernandes. First signs are promising for the Pogba-Fernandes partnership.

Mason Greenwood (6)

Made a bigger impact than James on the United right with his direct running and unpredictability. Could have scored a late goal from the right side.

Odion Ighalo (NA)

Played just over ten minutes and didn’t have too many touches of the ball.

Nemanja Matic (NA)

Also played the last 10 minutes, slotting in at the centre-back to replace Victor Lindelof. Was neat and tidy at the back.

Eric Bailly (NA)

Came on in the dying moments of the game.
