Manchester United‘s interest in Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez has started to gather steam. The player has been in sensational form for Italian giants Inter this season scoring 16 goals in the league and Champions League.
The in-demand striker was thought to be heading to Camp Nou to unite with Argentine colleague Lionel Messi as personal terms were believed to be agreed between the player and the La Liga side.
But the transfer has suddenly come to a standstill as Barcelona are not willing to meet the £99million release cause of Lautaro Martinez. The Catalans are instead looking to offer Inter £62million plus left-back Junior Firpo to get hold of Martinez.
Manchester United, however, are not the only side keeping close tabs on the Argentine as Real Madrid are also on their toes after getting to know about the disagreement going on between Inter and Barcelona, understands Mirror.
Lautaro Martinez: Can he solve their goalscoring woes?
Manchester United have struggled to live up to the expectations of their fans since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and Lautaro Martinez could be a suitable piece in the jigsaw to revive past glories. Martinez is extremely clinical in front of the goal and his positioning inside the box is something that sets him apart from the rest.
The 22-year-old has been on the scoresheet 11 times in 22 league games in the Serie A this season and has also delivered stellar performances for Argentina, which highly rated forwards like Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain have often failed to do.
The Red Devils currently have Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial leading their offensive line but the latter of the two has not been consistent enough to stop Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from planning for added reinforcements.
The Old Trafford based outfit failed miserably to replace Romelu Lukaku’s goals and now could turn to his main competitor at Inter to come in and solve their issues upfront.
Lautaro Martinez could definitely come in good for the team as he can be played in a 4-4-2 formation alongside Rashford to light up the scoreboards.
Rashford’s ability to play on the wings could also allow the centre-forward to play as a lone striker for the Premier League outfit depending on the opponent. Martinez’s tremendous pace would also be an addition to the team upfront as he could get at the end of through balls and crosses provided by Rashford and Daniel James from the wings, rightly matching their pace.
Overall, a prolific goalscorer like Lautaro Martinez could definitely bring an end to Manchester United’s goalscoring woes and would re-install their image as a deadly attacking force in Europe that they were known to be under Sir Alex Ferguson.
