Chelsea Eye A Transfer For £49m Rated Goal-Machine: How Will They Line Up With Him?

Chelsea could reportedly join the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner. The German striker has been in brilliant form this season, having scored 31 goals in 40 games in all competitions.

As per ESPN, the Blues could turn their attention to Werner from Moussa Dembele, if the German indicates his desire to play for the London club.

The report says that Lyon may not demand the £80 million that they initially wanted for Dembele in January. However, Werner will be a much cheaper option as his release clause is set at £49 million, so he is a more viable target.

How will Chelsea line up with Timo Werner?

Goalkeeper

There hasn’t been much talk about the future of Kepa, who has had a rocky 2019-20 season. We are going to assume that he will start between the sticks next season.

Defence

The Chelsea defence needs some improvement. Antonio Rudiger is likely to start in the centre-back role, alongside a new signing or either one of Kurt Zouma or Fikayo Tomori.

We could see captain Cesar Azpilicueta reprise his role at right-back, but he will have strong competition from young full-back, Reece James.

The Blues may have a new player at left-back, having been linked with the likes of Nicolas Tagliafico (h/t Metro) and Juventus’ Alex Sandro.

Midfield

If all midfielders are fit and available, the three that could play are Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic.

There has been some talk of Jorginho returning to Italy (h/t Goal) and joining Juventus, reuniting with former Blues manager, Maurizio Sarri. If that happens, Chelsea may get in a top-class midfielder who could slot in alongside Kante and Kovacic to control the tempo of passing.

Mason Mount will be one of the options for the midfield three, if either of the first-choice midfielders is injured or out of form.

Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are other options for Lampard.

Attack

If Timo Werner does sign for Chelsea, he will go straight into the starting lineup, replacing youngster Tammy Abraham. With Willian and Pedro set to leave the club (they will be out of contract come the end of the season), a spot will open up on the Chelsea right. New signing Hakim Ziyech, who will join the Blues from Ajax, should slot on the right side.

Over on the left, Christian Pulisic or Callum Hudson-Odoi could start for the Blues. Mount could also play there, if required.
