Chelsea in talks over a move for £27m-rated winger: Solid option for Lampard to consider

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Porto winger Jesus Corona, with the player’s agent revealing the Blues’ interest in the 27-year-old. Corona is a Mexican international who has been with the Portuguese club since 2015.

In a recent interview with Medio Tiempo, Corona’s agent Matias Bunge said that they have spoken to Chelsea about a move to the London club. Bunge also revealed that his client’s release clause is currently set at £27 million. He said that they have had discussions with clubs in Spain, Germany and England.

Jesus Corona joined Porto from FC Twente for €10.5 million in 2015, and he has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals and assisting 51 times. He is a Mexican international and has played 42 games for his national side.

Jesus Corona: What will he add to the team?

Chelsea have already secured the signing of one attacking player in Hakim Ziyech, who will join the club before the 2020-21 season, from Ajax. The Blues may need to sign another wide player before the start of the next season as two experienced wingers, Willian and Pedro, are set to leave the club at the end of the season when their contracts expire.

The London club have two options out wide, apart from Willian and Pedro – the young Callum Hudson-Odoi and the relatively new Christian Pulisic. Pulisic has shown flashes of brilliance but will need more time before he can nail down a starting place while the same applies to Hudson-Odoi who has a long-term future at Chelsea and should be nurtured pragmatically.

This means that the Blues will need to sign a winger who is a little more experienced. Corona would be a decent signing for the Blues, who have shown great promise going forward under Frank Lampard this season. The Mexican is a quick and nimble winger, who uses his pace to blast past opposition defenders and put crosses into the box. He is an old-fashioned winger who likes to hug the touchline and take on defenders and someone like Tammy Abraham will relish getting at the end of such crosses.

He averaged 2.2 dribbles per game in the Portuguese league while putting in an average of 1.8 crosses per game. Jesus Corona is a hard-working player who also contributes in defence with interceptions and tackles, using his pace to good effect. Apart from playing as an attacking winger, he has also played as a full-back.

Corona would be a decent signing for the Blues and will give Lampard a variety of options out wide and add depth and experience to a talented squad which is somewhat lacking in both areas.
