Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to land Chelsea winger Willian, who will be reunited with former boss Jose Mourinho at the North London club if the move goes through. The experienced Brazilian’s contract with the Blues expires in the summer and he won’t be signing a new deal with Chelsea.
As per beIN Sports (via Daily Mail), journalist Richard Keys revealed that Willian is “on his way to Tottenham” and has already talked to Mourinho. Willian has been with the Blues since 2013 but it seems that his time at the club is coming to end with manager Frank Lampard keen on assembling a youthful squad with fresh legs the need of the hour.
In the current season, the Brazilian international has scored 7 goals and provided 6 assists in 37 games for the club.
Willian: A good option for Mourinho?
Willian and Mourinho have a good relationship on and off the pitch, with the Chelsea player revealing earlier that he still speaks to the Portuguese manager. The winger has won two Premier League titles, one of which came when Mourinho was the manager of the club.
The 31-year-old has been an important player for the Blues over the last few seasons, making over 300 appearances for the club. But now Willian could be a good option for Mourinho at Spurs, considering he’s available on a free transfer, their great relationship, as well as the experience that Willian would add to the North London club.
He is a clever operator on the right side and a hard-working player who would flourish in Mourinho’s system at Spurs. Mourinho’s two options on the right are Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela. The latter has struggled with injuries and could see the exit door in the summer, while the former has shown glimpses of brilliance but hasn’t been consistent. Moussa Sissoko is another player who has played on the Spurs’ right under Mourinho but lacks flair going forward.
What Willian would add to the Spurs side is a good work ethic, dribbling ability, as well as good passing and crossing from the wide areas. He is also an experienced player who has been in the league for a long time, which will help him settle down quickly in his new surroundings while adding some much-needed depth to the Spurs squad which has borne a threadbare look throughout the season. A free transfer means that Mourinho will have funds to strengthen other areas of the pitch.
