Leeds United Linked With Versatile German Defender: Why Bielsa Should Go All Out

Leeds United are linked with a move for German defender Robin Koch, who currently plays for Freiburg in the Bundesliga. The 23-year-old central defender is a promising young player, who earned his first cap for his country last year.

As per Leeds Live, the centre-back could be sold by Freiburg, with the club’s manager revealing that the defender may be available for sale while also adding that no player is ‘not for sale’. Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are also interested in the defender. His contract with the German club expires next year.

He has played over 75 times for the club, since joining them in 2017 from Kaiserslautern.

Robin Koch: Smashing move by Bielsa?

Robin Koch is a promising young defender, who has caught the eye of a few clubs in Europe. The 23-year-old is a versatile player, who has played in defensive midfield and central midfield positions apart from his natural centre- back position in the 2019-20 season.

The German is a player who is very good in the air, winning an average of 3.8 headers in the Bundesliga this season. Koch is a defender who likes to press early, push the opposition players into their own half often, and make vital tackles. The three-man defensive formation that Freiburg use has allowed Koch to push forward, and even go into midfield positions in order to win the ball back.

His movement into midfield areas also helps him build attacks with his strong passing. He has averaged 50.5 passes per game in the Bundesliga this season, as well as 4.8 aerial balls per game. Robin Koch is composed with the ball at his feet and is a good passer with both feet. These are qualities that Marcelo Bielsa loves in his central defenders, which makes Koch a promising potential addition to the Leeds United side.

If the Whites get promoted to the Premier League, they will need a much stronger squad. Central defence is one area where Leeds will need more players. At the moment, they only have captain Liam Cooper, on-loan defender Ben White, and experienced centre-back Gaetano Berardi, whose contract with the Whites expires at the end of the season. Right-back Luke Ayling has played at centre-back, as has defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips, but both are needed in their natural positions.

This is why it’s imperative that Bielsa signs a player like Robin Koch in the summer.
