Manchester United could lose Angel Gomes in the summer as Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing him. Gomes, who was the captain of the England U17 team that won the U17 World Cup in 2017, could leave Old Trafford in the summer when his contract expires.
As per Mirror, Chelsea are keen admirers of the 19-year-old who recently rejected a £30,000-a-week contract offered by Manchester United. The promising youngster reportedly wants first-team football which is why transfer talks between him and Manchester United have broken down.
The England U20 international has been at Manchester United since six years of age and has played 10 times for the senior team. He made his senior debut at the tender age of 16 in 2017 but has seen opportunities hard to come by.
Angel Gomes: What can the Blues expect from him?
Angel Gomes is regarded as one of the many talented players to recently come through the ranks at Old Trafford. The diminutive attacking midfielder has great dribbling ability with the ball at his feet while also possessing the vision to play in through balls. He can dictate the tempo of the game from midfield, while also chipping in with goals and assists.
The 19-year-old has shown great composure with the ball and is not fazed by bigger and stronger players around him. He uses his weight and size cleverly to move quickly away from opposing players with feints and flicks, while also being a good passer of the ball – long and short. He is a player with tremendous potential, one who could play behind the main striker, while also dropping into central midfield to pick up the ball and drive at the opposition.
Angel Gomes has also played off the left-hand side, cutting into central areas with his pace and dribbling skills. He is a player that is fearless and backs his ability time after time.
He could be a good signing for Frank Lampard, who has promoted youth consistently in his first year in charge of Chelsea. Lampard may not be able to give Gomes first-team chances immediately due to the numerous midfielders available at his disposal, but he could give the youngster a go in cup competitions as the young English manager has shown surprising confidence in youth to spearhead the club’s endeavours.
With the player available on a free transfer – and only a compensation fee required to be paid by Chelsea – this would seem like a good deal for the Blues, as well as the player, who might profit from a change in scenery which will see him come out of his comfort zone.
