Tottenham Hotspur Agree Deal For Versatile Dutch Attacker: Excellent Option For Jose

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on their second signing of the January transfer window. According to a report on Guardian, the club has agreed on a base fee of £25.4m (plus £2m in bonuses) for winger Steven Bergwijn with PSV Eindhoven.

PSV’s General manager Toon Gerbrands confirmed that a deal had been struck at midnight on Monday and an announcement is imminent with a medical pending.

Steven Bergwijn came through the ranks at PSV, having joined their youth academy in 2011 from Ajax. The attacker has made 149 appearances for PSV, scoring 31 goals and providing 41 assists in all competitions. This season, Bergwijn has scored 6 and assisted 13 goals in all competitions for his club.

Steven Bergwijn: A good fit at Tottenham Hotspur?

Tottenham’s hopes of finishing in the top 4 were dealt a huge blow when their talisman Harry Kane suffered an injury, which would keep him out at least till April. This has resulted in Jose Mourinho not having any credible full-time options up top to replace Kane.

Lucas Moura has played as the central striker recently, but he’s not a natural in that position, while Son Heung-min is another option up top having impressed in that role albeit in patches. But they are the most likely options to try and fill that void which means Spurs become light on the wings especially when it comes to players who can contribute to the goals and assists tally.

Steven Bergwijn could be an exciting signing for Mourinho and Spurs as he is a player that has excellent attacking abilities, with his confident dribbling and pace. The Dutchman can play on the left, right or as the main striker. His primary position is on the left, drifting in from wide areas, and playing key passes, crosses and taking shots on goal. His main strength is his impressive dribbling ability, while he also has the vision to play through balls to teammates with impressive regularity.

His pace could be a huge threat on the counter-attack and his versatility is an added bonus too. Signing Steven Bergwijn will give Mourinho the option to play Son on the left or as the central striker, which Bergwijn could do as well, and their interchangeability could cause a lot of trouble for opposition defenders. The 22-year-old would be a very good addition to the Spurs squad which is in dire need of dynamism and fresh blood if the last two months are anything to go by.
