Leicester City Eye A Swoop For Mexican Star: What Will He Add To The Team?

Leicester City are interested in signing young Mexican player Roberto Alvarado from Cruz Azul, claim reports.

The 21-year-old is a Mexican international who joined Cruz Azul in 2018 and has impressed for them.

As per Football Insider, the Foxes, along with Premier League side Crystal Palace, are keen on securing the signature of Alvarado in the January transfer window.

But several other European clubs — PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, Atalanta, and Lyon — are also keen on securing his signature. Cruz Azul are willing to sell the 21-year-old for a fee of around £11 million in the winter transfer window.

Alvarado previously had trials with Leicester City, as well as Sunderland and Manchester United.

He has scored twice and managed one assist in the 2019–20 Liga MX season. The Mexican has also played the national team on 18 occasions, scoring three times since making his debut in 2018.

Roberto Alvarado – What will he add to Leicester City

Alvarado is an exciting young player, who is highly-rated in Mexico. The left-footed player is an attacking midfielder, who can also play on either flank, as well as a shadow striker.

He is a versatile player, whose primary trait is to create chances for his teammates. A deceptively quick player, Alvarado moves through the gears very well to get the ball to the final third, and drifts into holes in the opposition’s defence.

The Mexican is a hard-working player who not only provides quality in attack, but also does his bit in defence, pressing high up on opposition defenders to pressure them into making a mistake.

Alvarado could very well be a replacement for James Maddison in the Leicester City attack if the Foxes sell the Englishman in the summer.

He is an attacking midfielder just like Maddison, and being left-footed means that he can slot in on the left side of midfield, exactly where the Englishman plays as well.

The Mexican international has the creativity and vision to pick out passes and would do very well in this young Leicester City team.

While it may be a big gamble by Leicester to sign a young player from the Mexican league – which is nowhere near the quality of the Premier League – the price tag that has been slapped on Alvarado makes this a gamble worth taking for Brendan Rodgers.
