Liverpool, unbeaten so far in the league this season, face off against Manchester United on Sunday. The Reds are 13 points ahead of Manchester City, who are in second having played 2 games more, and a whopping 27 points ahead of this weekend’s opponents.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have a busy two weeks ahead as they play 5 games in the space of 13 days before the break.
The last time these two sides faced off earlier this season, Liverpool were held to a draw – the only points that they have dropped in the league so far.
Let’s take a look at the Liverpool lineup for the game against Manchester United.
Team News
Defender Dejan Lovren and midfielders James Milner and Naby Keita will not be a part of the game against Manchester United. But the good news is that Joel Matip and Fabinho could return to the Liverpool squad for the game.
Goalkeeper
Alisson should start as the goalkeeper in the Liverpool lineup.
Defence
Joel Matip last played in this reverse fixture back in October. He may not be added to the starting XI and instead be on the bench.
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez should start as the two central defenders in Liverpool’s defence. The full-backs should be the same – Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back and Andrew Robertson at left-back.
Midfield
Fabinho’s return to the team poses a tough question for Jurgen Klopp. The Brazilian has been out since the last week of November, and like Matip, he too could earn a place on the bench, with an immediate start highly unlikely.
Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Georginio Wijnaldum should start in midfield in the Liverpool lineup, with Fabinho and Adam Lallana being the other options.
Lallana scored the late goal against Manchester United that gave Liverpool the draw last time around. But he will not get to start this time.
Attack
The attacking lineup is going to be the same, featuring Liverpool’s famed trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
January signing Takumi Minamino, striker Divock Origi, and winger Xherdan Shaqiri are other options for Liverpool manager Klopp, but they will all be options from the bench.
