Leicester City Looking To Sign Defensive Ace For £15million: A Canny Move By Rodgers?

Leicester City have been linked with a move for Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard, according to reports.

As per the Sun, Leicester are looking to sign Vestergaard for a fee of £15million as they look to finish in the top four and feature in the Champions League next season.

The Foxes have kept eight clean sheets so far in the league. Their two prized centre-backs Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans are in sublime form. However, with the Foxes in a good place to qualify for Champions League next season, quality squad depth would serve the club well.

Veteran defender Wes Morgan is way past his prime, and often struggles with injuries. Filip Benkovic is another alternative, but Rodgers feels the Croatian is not up for first-team action yet.

Jonny Evans will also turn 33 next season, and clubs are expected to go all-out after Caglar Soyuncu in the summer. So, the situation is not as bright as it seems.

Jannik Vestergaard: Will he be another shrewd signing?

Leicester City have made quite a few clever signings in the last few years. Vestergaard, who arrived at the South coast in 2018 for £18m, might be an addition to that list.

Vestergaard has had his issues adjusting to the league’s pace, but has started performing better of late under Hasenhuttl, which proves he is a good player provided the system is right.

The Dane did well in a similar pressing and dynamic system at Borussia Monchengladbach, and has started performing well in Hasenhuttl’s style. Rodgers emphasises on playing out from the back, and Vestergaard, who is strong on the ball, would be a good signing.

Vestergaard has made 12 appearances so far this season, and averages 1 tackle and 1.3 interceptions a game. His positioning sense has been impressive as he has been at the right place more often than not. Averaging 5.7 clearances a game, Vestergaard is a reliable player to have at the back.

Still only 27, Vestergaard has a lot of time to develop into a top centre-back in the Premier League, and could form a good partnership with Soyuncu. For a fee of £15million, he would be a pretty shrewd addition.
