Leicester City could make a move for Juventus central defender Daniele Rugani in the January transfer window, it has been reported.
The Foxes enjoyed a good first half of the season, before enduring back-to-back losses against Manchester City and Liverpool, the teams they happen to split in the Premier League table.
As per Daily Telegraph, Brendan Rodgers could sign Rugani to add depth to his squad, to have a good second half of the season.
The Italian defender has featured briefly under Maurizio Sarri at Juventus this season, and has struggled to find first-team football.
Merih Demiral has also not found much playing time with Juventus this season, and he is another player that Leicester are reportedly interested in.
Rugani’s deal with the current Italian champions expires in 2024, as he signed an extension earlier this year. The 25-year-old defender has made 90 appearances for Juventus, scoring 7 times, while also playing 7 times for the Italian national team.
Daniele Rugani – Top option for Rodgers?
Leicester City have surprised everyone with their scintillating performances in the first half of the 2019-20 season, but it’s quite clear that their squad needs to be bolstered to compete with the big dogs of the Premier League.
The central defensive duo of Jonny Evans and Caglar Söyüncü have been very good at the back, and Leicester have not missed Harry Maguire, who was sensational for them last season.
But, Leicester need another centre-back to be added to their squad in the next two transfer windows. Evans turns 32 in January and he may not be able to play constantly, especially if Leicester qualify for European football for next season, which looks highly likely.
Wes Morgan seems to be coming to the end of his playing career, which leaves Leicester City with just one young defender in Söyüncü.
Rugani would be a great addition to the Leicester squad as he has loads of experience, is a solid defender and is also one that can play out from the back. These qualities make him the perfect player for Brendan Rodgers’ set-up at the Foxes.
The Italian defender is a big, strong defender that can bully attackers, while also possessing good passing range with the ball at his feet.
Rugani could be a long-term partner for Söyüncü at the back, and the left foot-right-foot combination would work very well in defence.
