Jose Mourinho’s long term plan at Tottenham Hotspur will involve replacing a chunk of ageing talent. One such player whose time at the club may be coming to an end is Hugo Lloris.
According to an exclusive from talkSPORT, German youngster Alexander Nubel is a transfer target for Spurs, who are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper.
He will be a free agent come the end of the season but can he be Mourinho’s no.1?
Who Is Alexander Nubel?
An athletic shot-stopper who has been with Schalke since 2015, Nubel only managed to break into the first team in the second half of last season.
He took no time to impress, making a series of match-winning appearances early in his career. This has seen him take up the arm-band at such a young age.
At just 23, Nubel is yet to make a senior appearance for the German national side but has 17 caps at the U21 level.
He has already attracted interest from Bayern Munich, but it is hard to see a player with such potential change club for a place on the bench.
His reflexes have saved The Royal Blues on a number of occasions in his 32 Bundesliga games and his calm approach to the game makes it all the easier for the defensive line in front of him.
Nubel is pro-active, has hardly made mistakes, even under pressure and has the quality to be a first-team star for a club of Spurs’ stature.
Can He Replace Lloris?
The French international has missed a number of games this season with an injury and his future at the club is looking bleak.
Mourinho will want his side to be compact at the back and Lloris’ shaky start to the season before the injury may not make him the manager’s favourite in the coming months.
Paulo Gazzaniga, who is currently deputizing for Lloris has also been less than impressive so next summer might see a new player take up the position under the bar for Spurs.
Schalke will look to offer him a new deal but Nubel has shown enough promise to earn himself a move to the Premier League.
Alexander Nubel, who is just 23, may take time to make an impact in a foreign country but a chance to play under Mourinho might also be too hard to turn down.
He will be a free agent come the summer and is certainly a risk worth taking and if it pays off, provided they can give Nubel time, Spurs may have their goal-keeping department sorted for years to come.
