Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven.
The 22-year-old has been in fine form this season, scoring twice and registering seven assists in 10 games in the Dutch league. The Red Devils’ scouts have scouted him and watched him closely this season.
Mirror Football are reporting that he could be interested in a move away from PSV, but that he will only join a club who will qualify for the Champions League.
The report further goes on to state that PSV could demand a fee of around £40 million for the young winger, if he does leave the Dutch side. Bergwijn signed a new contract with the club this year, extending his stay at PSV till 2023.
He has won the Dutch league title thrice with PSV, making over 135 appearances since debuting back in the 2014-15 season. He also made his national team debut last year and has gone on to make 7 appearances for the Netherlands national side.
Is Steven Bergwijn the player Manchester United’s attack needs?
The 22-year-old Bergwijn is the latest exciting young player to emerge from the Netherlands, who has attracted interest from top European clubs.
The winger is a quick player, who primarily plays on the left side of attack, cutting into central areas with his stronger right foot.
Bergwijn is a strong dribbler of the ball and uses his good close control and technical skills to get past players, averaging 1.5 dribbles per game in the league this season.
His vision and passing ability have helped him rack up quite a large number of assists in the last couple of seasons. This season, Bergwijn has averaged 2.3 passes per game in the league for PSV.
Bergwijn’s quickness and dribbling ability also help him draw a lot of fouls, as he has been fouled on an average of 1.3 times per game this season. United need a player like him, who can cut in from the left and assist the attackers in the team.
Anthony Martial, who previously played on the left, has been used up front by Solskjaer this season which has resulted in Marcus Rashford being the only good first-choice option from the left.
Adding a player like Bergwijn could bring some much-needed depth to the United squad, and something different from the likes of Rashford and Martial.
