Manchester United Mulling Over A Move For Bundesliga Superstar: Does It Make Sense?

Manchester United are interested in adding goalscorers to their team in the next couple of transfer windows and are now reportedly interested in signing Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller. Muller, who has come through the ranks at Bayern Munich, has found opportunities limited this season.

The German international is linked with a move to United, as per The Guardian. Muller has found game time limited this season due to the arrival of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona in the summer. Muller has started just 3 of 8 games in the Bundesliga this season but has registered 4 assists so far. He has scored once and made six assists in 12 games for the club in all competitions.

The 30-year-old has made nearly 500 appearances for his club, scoring 186 goals and providing 173 assists in all competitions. Muller’s contract expires in the summer of 2021, having signed his last deal with the club in 2015. The German international has been a key figure for club and country for almost a decade but has found fewer chances this year.

Thomas Muller: The goalscorer they need?

Manchester United need to bolster their ranks in all areas of the pitch, including midfield and attack. Thomas Muller is a player who likes to play between the lines behind the striker or out wide on the right and drift into central areas. The German is a neat passer of the ball, who can pick out teammates and create goalscoring opportunities, while also chipping in with goals.

But, is he the kind of player that Manchester United need right now? Yes and no. Muller was at his peak between 2010 and 2016 but his form seems to have dipped in the last few seasons. The German could be a very useful option for Manchester United, perhaps better than a few players that are there at the club right now but his age and recent form should ultimately force manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to look elsewhere.

We have seen players from the German league struggle in the Premier League after excelling in Bundesliga and the same case could happen to Muller as well especially given the current predicament United are in along with his waning effectiveness.

He also does not fit the type of player that Solskjaer needs in the long term, as he is on the wrong side of 30 and may not improve further. United could perhaps try to sign him on loan in the January transfer window as they are likely to bolster their attacking options in winter and see how the German performs before deciding on any potential permanent move.
