Best Real Madrid XI So Far This Season: Hazard & Rodriguez Just About Edge It

After 8 games in the 2019-20 La Liga season, Real Madrid are at the top, ahead of rivals Barcelona by two points. Zinedine Zidane’s men have yet to lose a game in the league, winning five and drawing three of their opening eight games.

But, Real Madrid have been far from their best, and have a lot of work to do if they want to win their first league title in three years.

There have been a few encouraging performances this season, but a few players have disappointed as well.

Let’s take a look at Real Madrid’s best XI so far

Goalkeeper

Thibaut Courtois has played 6 of the 8 league games this season and even though he has not looked at his best, is the number one choice at the club.

Defence

In defence, the centre-back pairing of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane has played 7 games together this season, with Varane missing just one league game. Madrid have conceded 8 goals in 8 league games this season, which is a decent number.

Dani Carvajal continues to trouble defences from his right-back position and has already registered 3 assists in the 6 games that he has played so far. He has looked shaky in a few games, though.

Madrid have had an injury crisis at left-back, with both Marcelo and Ferland Mendy missing a few games, which resulted in Nacho deputising at left-back.

Marcelo just about edges it and makes it to our best XI team at left-back.

Midfield

Another player who has missed a few games due to injury is Luka Modric, who has started just one game this season and made a further three substitute appearances in the league. Toni Kroos and Casemiro have played all 8 league games this season, and have been in fine form, each player scoring once and assisting once this season.

It’s a difficult choice to pick the third midfielder in this Real Madrid team. Modric hasn’t played enough games, while James Rodriguez and Federico Valverde have been average, at best, in midfield. We are going to go with Rodriguez as he has scored a goal and provided an assist.

Attack

Striker Karim Benzema has been in superb form, scoring 6 goals in the opening 8 games. Gareth Bale started the season well, and has scored twice and assisted twice in 6 games.

These two make it to our best XI team, but the player to fill the left side is a tough one. Vinicius and Eden Hazard have both scored once and assisted once this season; we’ll pick Hazard as his form has improved lately.
