Matchweek 5 of the 2019-20 Premier League had some thrills and spills, with Premier League champions Manchester City falling to Norwich City, while Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the table.
Attackers dominated matchweek 5 with 32 goals being scored from 9 games (West Ham and Aston Villa are to play on Monday night), with a few players scoring braces and even a hat-trick.
Let’s take a look at the Top 5 players from Matchweek 5:
Sam Byram – Norwich City
Norwich City pulled off a shock to defeat Manchester City at home. The likes of Emi BuendÃa, Ibrahim Amadou, and goalscorer Teemu Pukki could have made the list, but the player that impressed the most was right-back Sam Byram, who made his first start of the season in place of the injured Max Aarons.
Byram kept in-form City attacker Raheem Sterling quiet, and made 5 tackles, 5 interceptions, 11 clearances, 3 blocks, and won 2 aerial duels, as he helped his team keep the champions at bay, and register a famous win.
Roberto Firmino – Liverpool
It is not often that a substitute gets on the top 5 players list, but Roberto Firmino’s introduction was so impactful that we had to put him in.
The Brazilian forward was brought on in the 37th minute to replace Divock Origi, who picked up a knock.
Firmino made an immediate impact, winning the ball and passing it to Sadio Mane who scored, giving Liverpool the lead.
The Brazilian then set up Mohamed Salah in the second half, who had very little to do and scored, securing all three points for Liverpool. Firmino has two goals and three assists in five games.
Tammy Abraham – Chelsea
Tammy Abraham has shushed his harshest critics in the best way possible, by scoring several goals this season.
The young Chelsea forward was subject to racist social media posts after he missed a penalty for Chelsea in the Super Cup against Liverpool.
But the young English forward has bounced back superbly and scored a fantastic hat-trick against Wolves this past weekend, taking his tally to 7 goals this season, and is the joint topscorer with Sergio Aguero.
Callum Wilson – Bournemouth
Another English forward who has continued his good form from last season is Callum Wilson, who has three goals from five goals after his brace against Everton this past weekend.
His first goal was a scrappy goal from a corner, while the second goal – in the 72nd minute – saw him react first and get in behind the Everton defence to lob it over the Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Son Heung-min – Tottenham
Tottenham forward Son Heung-min also scored a brace in matchweek 5 of the 2019-20 Premier League season in Spurs’ 4-0 mauling of Crystal Palace.
The South Korean scored two first-half goals against Palace, opening the scoring for Spurs in the 10th minute, followed by another goal in the 23rd minute as Tottenham raced to a 4-0 lead by half-time.
Son is a very important player for Spurs and his good form could help the North London side compete with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Great comments about Byram who was brilliant…but did you happen to have similar stats for Amadou who played along side him?
