After yet another defeat, their second of the 2019-20 Premier League season, Manchester United host League One side Rochdale on Wednesday night. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost to West Ham United this past weekend, in what was a tepid performance by the Red Devils.
Manchester United will look to get some momentum going in the game against Rochdale, where we could see wholesale changes, and the return of a few players from injury.
Manchester United Team News
United have several key attackers out due to injury and Marcus Rashford was added to that list in the game against West Ham United.
Solskjaer revealed that one of Anthony Martial or Mason Greenwood will return for the game against Rochdale, while both of them will be fit or the game against Arsenal next Monday.
Let’s take a look at the possible Manchester United lineup against Rochdale:
Predicted Manchester United Lineup vs Rochdale
Goalkeeper
Sergio Romero, who started for United against Astana in the Europa League last week, will return to goal for the third round League Cup match.
Defence
Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones started as the two centre-backs against Astana, and we could see the duo return against Rochdale. Marcos Rojo started at left-back in the Europa League, and he may return to the side, while young Brandon Williams could be a surprise addition to the team as well.
At right-back, Diogo Dalot will most likely reprise his role after playing the full 90 minutes against Astana, and replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Midfield
The big news ahead of the game against Rochdale is Paul Pogba’s potential return to the team after sitting out the last few games due to injury.
Solskjaer will need the Frenchman back in his side as the Red Devils have looked very poor in creating chances. He could play alongside Fred in midfield, after the Brazilian’s fine performance against Astana last week.
Fred came on in the second half against West Ham, but did not make a big difference to the United team. Angel Gomes, who also started against Astana, will most likely return to the side in the No. 10 role.
Attack
We could possibly see Greenwood return as his injury was not as serious as Martial’s. The 17-year-old could play as the striker for the Red Devils, and flanked by Tahith Chong and Jesse Lingard.
