Italian club Fiorentina are reportedly keen on signing Manchester United’s Brazilian outcast, Fred. The midfielder was signed by the Red Devils last year from Shakhtar Donetsk but had a woeful first season at the English club. The Brazilian midfielder could be the subject of a bid from Fiorentina before the end of the transfer window on September 2, 2019.
According to La Nazione (via Calciomercato), the Italian side could make a bid for the player, who was signed for £52 million last season. The Brazilian still has four years remaining on his contract, but with Fred not featuring for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer yet this season and not even being a part of any of the three squads for the three Premier League games, the midfielder could move out of the club soon.
Fred played 25 times last season, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the entire season. The midfielder arrived late to pre-season training and did not feature much in pre-season for Manchester United.
Should Manchester United sell him?
Manchester United have a problem in midfield as fans and pundits have criticised the lack of creativity in the centre of the park, which was especially evident in this past weekend’s game against Crystal Palace, where the midfield had extreme difficulty creating clear cut chances for the forward players.
Solskjaer has a difficult job on his hands as the side do not have quality players in the middle of the park, with Paul Pogba the only world-class midfielder in the squad. The Red Devils manager seems to favour Scott McTominay, who despite being a promising player, is by no means a Manchester United first-team player on whom such a major portion of the responsibility could be entrusted, at the moment.
Solskjaer’s other options – Nemanja Matic and Andreas Pereira, are two players who are also not good enough for the United first-team if they want to win the title, with the former well past his prime and the latter inconsistent and inexperienced.
United should keep hold of Fred for another season and assess his performances this year before making plans to sell him. His value currently is around €30m and a sale at this point would mean a huge loss for a player who was signed just 12 months ago by the club.
Players have shown in the past that they can adapt and become better in the second season with any club and United should do exactly that with Fred, as he does have the talent and technique to succeed at the club.
