There is not long left in the transfer market this summer but Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool could still be active in the transfer market, having failed to add a single player to their senior squad this summer.
And Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan is one player that could shift to Anfield before the start of the new season, claim reports from Express.
The former Borussia Dortmund star has just a year left on his current deal at Etihad and The Athletic claim that he has already agreed on terms on a new deal with City ahead of the new campaign.
But that deal is not yet official, giving Liverpool an outside chance to sign the midfielder.
Gundogan and His Past:
Having started his Bundesliga career with Nurnberg, the 28-year-old joined Dortmund back in 2011 and slowly grew into a regular in the first team under then-manager Jurgen Klopp.
He managed to win all three domestic cups in Germany before moving to Manchester City in 2016. He now has two Premier League titles to his name in four years in England and is expected to play a huge role for Pep’s side next season.
With Fernandinho and David Silva not expected to play every week, Gundogan will be a pretty important for Guardiola, even after the addition of Rodri this summer.
Capable of playing in a holding midfield role, the German international is a central midfielder, who has the knack of scoring crucial goals for his side.
His late runs into the box are hard to mark while his ability to create chances from deep in the midfield make him that much more dangerous.
He is strong with his hold up play, can break the opponents play in the middle of the park and is quick with his passing, which has become all the more dangerous in the system Pep plays at Etihad.
Good Fit For Liverpool?
Though Liverpool have made no additions to the squad that lifted the Champions League last season, the midfield is not an area of concern for the Reds at the moment.
An addition like Gundogan will only make them stronger but Liverpool have the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum and Adam Lallana to play in those roles.
So unless Klopp sees the City man as a first-team star, Gundogan is more useful to City than he is to Liverpool.
He may not be too expensive, given that he has just a year left on his current deal but it is understood that Gundogan is close to signing a new deal with City, which might be the best move for all involved.
