After their disappointing end to the 2018-19 season, Tottenham are set for a rebuild, with several players set to be put on the chopping block, while manager Mauricio Pochettino has begun signing players as well.
Spurs will also have to secure the long-term future of some of their key players, and it seems like they will offer a new contract to left-back Ben Davies, whose contract with the club expires in two years.
Telegraph are reporting that Spurs will offer the Welshman a long-term contract with the club, and that he will sign the contract in the next few weeks.
Davies and England left-back Danny Rose were rotated over the course of the 2018-19 season, but reports have suggested that Rose has been put on the transfer list and may leave the club before the start of the 2019-20 season.
Having joined Spurs from Swansea City in 2014, Davies has gone on to make over 150 appearances for the club, and has played as a left-back as well as a centre-back in a back three.
The Welsh international has also become an important figure for the Wales national team, making over 40 appearances.
What will Ben Davies’ role be at the club next season?
Davies has had a steady rise at Spurs following his move from Swansea. The 26-year-old has become a good player for the team, but isn’t quite the attacking full-back that Spurs need in their set-up. Davies is a much more defensive-minded full-back to Danny Rose, but is a good all-round defender.
A good passer and crosser of the ball, Davies’ neat and careful passing helps in building attacks from the back, in contrast to Rose’s driving runs thanks to his strong dribbling.
However, Pochettino and co. must search for an attack-minded left full-back, who can offer support from the wide areas with good dribbling, pace and crossing abilities.
If Rose does leave the club, a young player like Ryan Sessegnon, who is capable of playing as a full-back, wing-back, or left-sided winger, would be a very good option for Pochettino.
Spurs must invest in the 19-year-old Fulham player who has impressed for the Cottagers ever since he made his debut at the age of 16.
Davies could be an able deputy at full-back, while also offering another option as a central, left-sided defender.
