After falling out of the top-4 last season, Manchester United were expected to be one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market this summer. They have been linked with a number of star players from around Europe but one link that refuses to fade away is their interest in a certain Serbian.
Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has now told the Italian side that he wants to quit the club this summer, according to reports from Italian news outfit Il Tempo (via Express).
The 24-year-old has been linked with a move Old Trafford for over a year now and with the player pushing for a move, United might finally be able to land their transfer target this summer.
What Does He Bring To England?
Born and brought up in Spain, Savic started his senior career in Serbia, moved to Belgium, before joining Lazio in 2015 as a relative unknown.
His exploits in the first season in Serie A caught the eye of the biggest clubs in Europe and Savic soon became one of the first names on the team sheet for the Italian side.
The 24-year old has now played 125 Serie A games for Lazio and is one of the most established midfielders in the country.
He was named the ‘Best Serie A midfielder’ for the previous season after registering five goals and three assists in 29 league starts.
A central midfielder by trait, Savic is a strong and dominating presence in the middle of the park. He is technically gifted, and his vision allows him to find the right pass even under severe pressure.
He is adept at hold up play, is strong in the air and will be effective inside both boxes in dead-ball situations.
What makes him that much more dangerous is his ability to ping accurate long balls with as much ease as he can dribble past a crowd of opponents.
He is reckless with his tackling at times but is more often than not finding the right place to break up attacks and is a midfielder most teams would love to have in their side.
Where Does He Fit In?
United have lost Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini in the last two transfer windows and are desperate for a player who can walk into the first team next season.
Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba are the best options for the midfield role alongside Savic, who will push Fred down the pecking order.
Savic adds extra protection to the midfield and the backline, which will allow Pogba to play a more advanced role.
The Lazio star can also replace Matic if needed in a deeper midfield role, which will help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to field different systems within the game.
At 24, Savic is surely a star in the making and could be United’s best transfer in recent times.
savic..pogba…Fernandez…..and any other..matic / mctominay / fred…whomever, now that’s not a bad set up for competing with more & better established midfielders of other teams…
