Leicester City are monitoring Burnley central defender James Tarkowski from close quarters, it has been reported.
The Foxes are preparing for life without their star defender Harry Maguire for the upcoming season and have their sights on Tarkowski, it has been claimed by the Birmingham Mail.
Maguire has reportedly made it clear to Brendan Rodgers that he is keen to make an exit from the King Power Stadium this summer amidst interest from Manchester City and Manchester United.
The report states that the Red Devils have tabled a bid of £70million to lure the English interest to the Old Trafford. However, Rodgers’ camp has slapped a price tag of £85million on his collar.
Impliedly, the former Celtic boss has to fill the void if Maguire eventually bids farewell to Leicester City. In such a scenario, Tarkowski would be a sensible replacement.
James Tarkowski: Profile
Tarkowski worked on his game in the youth ranks of Blackburn Rovers and Oldham Athletic and eventually paved his way into the senior side of the latter. A switch to Brentford followed before his move to the ranks of Clarets in 2016.
The 26-year-old was one of the instrumental figures for Sean Dyche’s side during the previous campaign. He made 35 appearances in the Premier League last season and bagged three goals and an assist.
Besides, he made 2 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 6.7 clearances per game on an average and it is not surprising to see reports emerging that Leicester City have to roll out at least £40million to prise him out of Turf Moor.
Will he be a good replacement?
Tarkowski is a strong defender with notable aerial prowess. He is decisive in his tackling and is generally a composed player at the back. He has made over 100 appearances for Burnley and his Premier League experience and pedigree is unquestionable.
The English international showcases admirable work rate and has the pace to deal with the attacking endeavours of the opposition. Notably, his passing has not been up to the mark in recent times and this is one area he needs to work on if he is to successfully replace Harry Maguire who is currently a couple of rungs higher than James.
Leicester City finished ninth in the English top flight last season and must strive towards a European spot in the upcoming season. A proven defender like Tarkowski could meet their needs and it will be interesting how Rodgers approaches this deal with signs that the Foxes are going to back the former Liverpool boss to the hilt in the transfer market.
