Everton are interested in signing Hertha Berlin centre-forward Davie Selke who has a contract with the Bundesliga club until June 2022.
According to a report from the German tabloid BILD, Toffees’ scout Nassim Banouas was present for the German club’s game against Karlsruhe to closely observe the Hertha trio of Marvin Plattenhardt, Davie Selke, and Karim Rekik.
Selke is highly rated but had a substandard 2018/19 campaign with the German club.
The 24-year-old managed a mere 4 goals and 9 assists in 32 appearances for the club across all competitions as the Berlin club finished 11th in the league table.
Is he a good option for Silva?
Selke is a one-dimensional typical modern-day centre-forward who is a fine finisher and impacts the game with his physical style of play.
The former Germany U-21 International is highly athletic and boasts supreme ability in the air, thanks to his 6ft 4in frame.
He managed an excellent 3.5 aerial duels won per game across all competitions last season.
The Hertha man possesses excellent awareness in and around the penalty area and looks to pounce on any opportunity provided to him.
The 24-year-old also has a decent ability to stay onside on the pitch and make runs through the middle keeping the defenders on their toes at all times, which is a sign of any top quality forward.
He averaged 1.5 shots and was caught offside for a mere 0.4 times per game across all competitions last term, which is more than decent for a striker.
However, there are numerous downsides to the former Leipzig striker’s game with his passing ability coming under the scanner quite often.
He averaged a poor pass success rate of 59.7% with 0.1 crosses, 0.2 long balls and 0.6 key passes, which highlights his subpar passing range.
Another key area where he must put in the work on the training ground is his dribbling ability and discipline on the pitch seeing he commits a lot of fouls which could be dangerous to his side at significant moments in the game.
He recorded 0.7 dribbles and committed 0.9 fouls per game last term- the latter must be dialled down taking into account the fact he handles his business way upfront and boasts a minimum defensive contribution over the course of 90 minutes.
The 24-year-old has spent the whole of his career in Germany so far and his Premier League inexperience is another red flag which the Toffees boss Marco Silva will be wary of in case the Merseyside club decides to put in a firm bid for the attacker.
