Tottenham Hotspur eyeing a move for Uruguayan powerhouse: A smart choice by Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur have upped the ante in the summer transfer window following their Champions League final defeat to Liverpool on Saturday night.

According to the Daily Mirror, Celta Vigo’s Maximiliano Gomez has emerged as the new name on the list of targets Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino would want for the upcoming season.

With many key players in Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld nearing the end of their contracts with their futures undecided and the obvious lack of squad depth at Spurs, the club’s chairman Daniel Levy would want to spend big this summer to ensure Pochettino stays at Tottenham for next season and beyond.

Maxi Gomez under Mauricio Pochettino: A shrewd choice by the Lilywhites

Gomez who is nicknamed El Toro meaning ‘The Bull’ in his native Uruguay has caught the attention of many European giants after two successful campaigns with The Celticos. He is already tipped as the successor to Luis Suarez in the Uruguay National team which is high praise for any young striker out there.

The Vigo striker is just 22 years old and has already established his reputation as a prolific goal scorer in Europe. Gomez managed 13 goals and 5 assists in 35 appearances in the Spanish top flight and has been the bright spot in an otherwise subpar campaign for the La Liga side.

The Uruguayan excels at a lot of things with his aerial ability touted as the best characteristic of the young striker. Gomez averaged 4 successful aerial duels per game last season and half of his goals scored were with headers.

His physicality and aggressive nature on the pitch which earned him the name ‘El Toro’ not only helps him bully opposition defenders and win aerial duels on the pitch but this nature in the Uruguayan’s play also ensures he excels as a target man to hold the ball for his team in attacking transitions.

A move to the Premier League sounds excellent for the young Uruguayan who cherishes the physical side of the game. Despite the presence of Harry Kane, the number of matches Spurs will expect to play in a season means the La Liga striker will get ample opportunities to perform and push for a place in the starting lineup.

With Fernando Llorente set to be released by the Lilywhites, Gomez could become the understudy to Harry Kane at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The 22-year-old is still a raw talent to an extent and will find the perfect coach in Pochettino to take him to further heights.
